Oregon Physician to Defy Cuba Travel Ban, Challenge Obama

Charles Grossman, MD, a retired Portland physician, held a press conference Friday, May 1, at the law offices of Kafoury & McDougal, 320 SW Stark, Ste 202 to formally announce his intention to challenge the federal ban on tourist visits to Cuba, and to encourage President Obama to lift the ban now. Dr. Grossman released the following statement:

In view of the lack of action by President Obama on lifting the ban on tourist visits to Cuba (Wall Street Journal, 4/17/09), I have decided that I shall challenge the ban by going as a tourist to Cuba on May 3, 2009. Legislation has been introduced in Congress regarding lifting all bans for US citizens to visit Cuba, however, President Obama has failed to administratively permit tourists access to free travel. His lack of action is not satisfactory for several reasons: 1) Needed US leadership in international diplomacy; 2) The chance to support and strengthen both Cuba and US economies regarding trade/tourism; 3) The chance to study positive and negative benefits of a single-payer healthcare system.

Senator Michael Enzi (R) of Wyoming introduced The Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act (S. 428), and it is co-sponsored by 25 Senators, inluding Oregon's Ron Wyden, and the companion version House HR (828) is co-sponsored by 125 Representatives, including Oregon's Earl Blumenauer and Peter DeFazio. [Where are Merkley, Wu and Schrader?]

I demonstrate my support for the legislation to permit tourist travel by leaving tomorrow. It is my hope that my travel will draw attention to the slowness of Congressional action. As a 94 year-old retired physician, I am not sure how long it will be before I can “legally” visit Cuba, or whether I shall live that long.

In the tradition of Linus Pauling, an old personal friend, who always called a press conference when he had difficulty traveling abroad, I encourage all Americans to follow my lead to challenge injustice as I am demonstrating today, and as I have tried to demonstrate my entire medical career.

Charles Grossman, MD

Recipient of Citizen of Year Award by Oregon Social Workers (1980)

Recipient of Albert Schweizer Peace Award by the International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War (1989)

Member of Physicians for Social Responsibility and International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, Recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985

Dr. Grossman was the first physician in the U.S. to administer penicillin. The patient was a moribund woman at Yale University in 1942. She made a full recovery.

Dairies Saying No to Artificial Hormone

April 10, 2009 -More than half of the nation’s 100 largest dairies have completely or partially discontinued the use of recombinant bovine growth hormone, known as rBGH or rBST. The genetically engineered drug is injected into cows to induce them to produce more milk.

The list includes most of the largest processors in the country, including Dean Foods, Land O’ Lakes, Kraft, Foremost Farms, Darigold and Prairie Farms Dairy. The trend shows no signs of slowing down. The two largest yogurt producers in the country, Dannon and Yoplait-Colombo, both reported they will discontinue the hormone by the end of this year.

According to Rick North of Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, which has coordinated a nationwide campaign opposing the hormone for over five years, “The movement has gone mainstream. Three years ago, most of the rBGH-dairies were smaller and concentrated in the Pacific Northwest and northern New England. Now it’s nationwide and includes the biggest players.”

The trend is also expanding beyond fluid milk into other dairy products. Besides yogurt, more cheese and ice cream companies have responded. Tillamook Cheese, the second largest producer of chunk cheese in the nation, led the way by going rBGH-free in 2005. Agrimark, the 29th largest overall processor in the country, announced that its Cabot Cheese brand will stop accepting milk with rBGH this August.

They join well-known brands such as Ben & Jerry’s, which has never used the hormone. “Our company has always believed that rBGH is a step in the wrong direction – and we’re glad to see such a significant move away from rBGH across the country. We are very encouraged that the market is catching up with what consumers want on this issue,” said Rob Michalak, Ben & Jerry's Director of Social Mission.

Dairies going rBGH-free consistently cite consumer demand. A 2008 Consumer Reports survey found that 70% of respondents were concerned about cows given artificial growth hormones and 57% would pay more for dairy products produced without it. This mirrored a 2007 survey commissioned by Chipotle Restaurants that found that 81% of people surveyed would prefer to buy dairy products from cows not treated with synthetic hormones if there was little price difference.

Consumer demand has also driven dairies not in the top 100. Sue Kesey, Co-owner of Springfield Creamery in Eugene, OR, the makers of Nancy’s Yogurt, said, “We continue to believe it is essential to provide folks with authentic food, which is why we have always sourced rBGH-free milk. We feel it is important and so do Nancy’s customers.”

In addition to individual consumers, more and more institutional buyers such as hospitals, schools and colleges have responded. According to Health Care Without Harm, a coalition of over 460 organizations that promotes safe and healthy practices in hospitals, over 160 hospitals have signed its pledge committing to phase out products with rBGH.

Retailers have also been a major force driving the trend. The two largest supermarket chains in the country, Wal-Mart and Kroger, now sell only rBGH-free private label milk, and Chipotle and Starbucks company-owned stores have gone completely rBGH-free. Ben Packard, Starbucks vice president for Global Responsibility, said

"Starbucks is pleased that we've been able to meet our customer requests to offer beverages made with milk from cows not treated with rBGH."

Organic milk, which by definition is rBGH-free, typically costs more than conventional rBGH-free brands. But even with the higher price, organic milk sales have grown by approximately 20% a year for a decade, although this has slowed recently due to the recession.

Although the FDA approved rBGH as safe in 1993, the hormone has been dogged by controversy. It increases disease rates in cows, including mastitis, which is treated by antibiotics. This could increase antibiotic resistance in humans, a major health problem. RBGH also increases levels of another hormone that has been linked to higher cancer rates in humans. The American Nurses Association, among numerous other organizations, has officially opposed rBGH and the past president of the American Medical Association advised AMA members to serve only rBGH-free milk in hospitals. Most industrialized countries, including Canada and all 27 nations of the European Union, forbid its use.

Oregon PSR’s North summarized, “The entire country is moving toward more healthy and sustainably-produced foods, and rBGH-free dairy products are helping to lead the way.”

Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility

Work Toward A Nuclear Free World

This past Sunday, President Obama and Russian President Medvedev met for the first time and made important commitments to work together on nuclear weapons issues. Significantly, they pledged their countries to “achieving a nuclear free world,” committing to negotiating a replacement agreement for the Strategic Arms Reductions Treaty (START). Doing so ensures verifiable reductions to both countries' nuclear stockpiles.

"Some argue that the spread of these weapons cannot be checked -- that we are destined to live in a world where more nations and more people possess the ultimate tools of destruction," stated President Obama. "This fatalism is a deadly adversary. For if we believe that the spread of nuclear weapons is inevitable, then we are admitting to ourselves that the use of nuclear weapons is inevitable" (Mark Smith, Associated Press/Yahoo!News, April 5).

President Barack Obama further elaborated, “As the only nuclear power to have used a nuclear weapon, the United States has a moral responsibility to act. We cannot succeed in this endeavor alone, but we can lead it, we can start it ... I state clearly and with conviction America's commitment to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons."

With more than 20,000 nuclear weapons in the world today -- and the US and Russia accounting for about 95 percent of those weapons – the pursuit of a new agreement by the two countries shows a reaffirmation of the importance of arms control measures that help make the world safer from nuclear weapons. Large stockpiles today only increase the risk of accidental launches or theft. Therefore, United States must be the international leader in working toward nuclear abolition for the safety of our citizens and the world’s.

The joint statement by Obama and Medvedev also contained commitments to work on other positive steps to strengthen the nuclear nonproliferation regime. These steps include: negotiations for a verifiable treaty to end the production of fissile materials for nuclear weapons, preventing nuclear terrorism, and US ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

Oregon PSR applauds President Obama’s frankness about the dangers of nuclear weapons and the need to take immediate action to avoid a nuclear holocaust. These have been the most significant remarks on nuclear disarmament within the last half century. We are hopeful that President Obama follows through, with the support of Congress, to reverse the Bush administration policy that made nuclear weapons a central tenet of American national security. Those policies would not only have preserved the thousands of nuclear warheads still in existence, but would have built a new generation of nuclear weapons.

Locally, in 2008 alone, Multnomah County's nuclear weapons financial contribution in tax payer funds was estimated as $124,855,229.96.* In the wake of a troubled economy that has forced thousands out of work, cut back programs for disadvantage individuals, and left many fearing for their jobs, shouldn’t we more closely examine what services are needed within Multnomah County and demand that this money stay here?

Oregon PSR encourages President Obama's administration to produce a plan that enables the United States and Russia to achieve zero nuclear weapons, starting by taking all nuclear weapons off "hair-trigger" alert. Having nuclear weapons is not a deterrent to individuals who want to cause innocent people harm for their political gains. If the United States continues to hold or decided to use nuclear weapons, we are not only risking the health, safety, and welfare millions of Americans but also wasting potentially billions of dollars on weapons that do not keep us safe. We encourage the Obama administration to follow through on their recent remarkable commitment to nuclear disarmament and ask citizens to join us to push our leaders to stop wasting our tax money on these destructive, useless weapons. Our work for this financial and cultural change will not only benefit US citizens, but all people on our small planet.

True Sustainable Communities

For Immediate Release:

As Governor Kulongoski seeks to pass numerous climate change bills and promote Oregon as a model green economy, isn’t it ironic that officials in the same county (Marion) may soon issue decisions that prolong and perhaps expand a municipal and medical waste incinerator that will cost Willamette Valley residents and others dearly -- unless citizens speak out.

The Marion County Solid Waste Management Advisory Council (SWMAC) is likely to soon make recommendations to the County Commissioners on a Solid Waste Management Plan that will affect us for decades. The plan includes proposals that could lead to a suggested one hundred million dollar expansion to the waste incinerator. Proposals are also being considered to use toxic ash from the incinerator in the construction of county roads.

The incinerator expansion would add more toxins and another 90,000 tons of greenhouse gases annually to our air. The incinerator’s current annual release of carbon dioxide equals emissions from over 35,000 cars. In a convoluted and deceptive public relations argument, the waste management industry claims to "offset" greenhouse gases from electricity-generating fossil fuels and from landfills. In fact, burning trash to produce electricity emits greenhouse gases equivalent to fossil fuels and throws in a host of toxins besides. With regard to "offsetting" methane gas from landfills, the solution is safely composting organic waste – not incineration.

Numerous health and environmental organizations in Oregon strongly recommend waste minimization and management strategies that exclude incineration. *National experts insist that "the single largest thing a city or county can do to add to the local economy and reduce its global environmental footprint is to transform its waste stream into a resource stream." Marion County proposes putting only a tiny fraction of its resources into those efforts while investing multi-millions into incineration that will negatively affect us and our children for decades to come.

Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility has a website** with extensive valuable information on this issue. In addition, the League of Women Voters of Marion and Polk Counties and multiple co-sponsors have arranged public forums to help you learn more. The next one is at 7 PM (come earlier for information booths), February 26, Room 201, Willamette University College of Law. Please, for yourself, your children and your community, speak out now -- at the forum and to SWMAC and the County Commissioners!

Local expert who can respond to these issues:

Joseph Miller, PhD, PSR board member, has extensive experience as a psychology, environmental studies and social justice educator, advocate, and writer. He is a past Chairperson of the Department of Psychology, Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana, where he taught from 1973 until 2008. While in Indiana, Joe worked with many different community organizations and coalitions addressing environmental, public health, and peace and social justice related issues. He moved to Portland in July 2008.

International Expert on the benefits of waste minimization and dangers of waste incineration, Dr. Paul Connett, will be available for interviews on February 25-March 2, 2009. Dr. Paul Connett is a graduate of Cambridge University and holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Dartmouth College. Over the past 23 years his research on waste management has taken him to 49 US states and 50 other countries, where he has given approximately 2000 pro bono public presentations. He has co-authored 6 peer reviewed articles on dioxin and numerous other articles on waste management. His latest article on this (Zero Waste and Sustainability) will appear in a book to be published in Italy in 2008. A series of videos Paul has produced on Zero Waste can be viewed at http://www.americanhealthstudies.org/

February 26 Forum: Dealing with Waste in a Sustainable Community

The Oregon Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility is pleased to co-sponsor and announce the second of three forums in the series "Dealing with Waste in a Sustainable Community... waste reduction, waste management, growth and sustainable solutions" being held at Willamette University in Salem.

The second forum will be held on February 26, 2009, and will feature presentations by Dr. Paul Connett, internationally renowned expert on the benefits of waste minimization and dangers of waste incineration, and Jeffrey Hahn, Environmental Director of the Convanta Energy Corporation (operator of the Marion County incinerator in Brooks), as well as ample opportunities for audience questions and comments. Oregon PSR strongly endorses Dr. Connett's advocacy of waste minimization and opposition to incineration.

Oregon PSR maintains that extensive, well-documented reasons and options exist for Marion County and other communities to conserve their resources, minimize their municipal and medical wastes, avoid or phase out incineration, and reduce and minimize landfills. By embracing such options Marion County and other communities will conserve resources, create jobs, reduce pollutants and global warming gases, reduce health impairment and health care costs, and reduce direct and indirect financial threats to citizens, businesses, governments, etc.

Additional information on the forums, directions to the forums, and Dr. Connett is available here.

Introductory and extended sets of articles and videos promoting waste minimization and opposing incineration compiled by Oregon PSR are available here.

Information on the 2007 statement endorsed by hundreds of national, state/regional, and local organizations, including Physicians for Social Responsibility and Oregon PSR opposing renewable energy credits, tax credits, subsidies and other incentives for incinerators burning municipal, medical and other wastes is available here.

Information on PSR's March, 1996 resolution on dioxin and medical waste incineration is available here.

Genetic Engineering in Agriculture: Four Perspectives on Benefits and Hazards

A Panel Discussion Open to the Public

January 30, 2009 - On February 5, 2009 four experts in the field of genetic engineering will take part in a panel discussion on the benefits and hazards of the application of this technology in agriculture. The panel is set up to present multiple perspectives on the issue and will be moderated by an official from the Oregon Department of Agriculture. Following the panel there will be time for questions from the audience to each of the panel participants.

The panel will feature Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility’s Campaign for Safe Foods Program Director, Rick North, Oregon State University's Associate Director of Outreach in Biotechnology Dr. David Harry, Portland State University's Dr. Lisa Weasel and Oregonians for Food and Shelter's Terry Witt. The panel will be moderated by Dan Hilburn of the Oregon Department of Agriculture. Each panelist brings a unique perspective on the pros and cons of genetic engineering. Lori Beamer, of LifeSource Natural Foods and coordinator of rBGH-Free Salem, is promoting the event in the community as interesting and informative, “The event is intended to increase understanding of genetic engineering in a stimulating format that will assist consumers in making informed decisions about the foods they choose to eat.”

The presentation is a collaborative effort between Friends of the Straub Environmental Learning Center, Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, and rBGH-Free Salem, a local volunteer group working to raise awareness about genetic engineering.

The presentation will be held at the Salem Public Library at 585 Liberty St. SE from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. on February 5, 2009. Admission is free and open to the public.

For more information contact: Rick North – hrnorth@hevanet.com; 503-968-1520.

Oregon PSR is a Portland based non-profit dedicated to raising awareness about environmental health and justice issues. The organization is devised of four programs including: Peace and Security, Environmental Health, Global Warming, and the Campaign for Safe Food (www.oregonpsr.org).

The Friends of the Straub Environmental Learning Center, a non-profit organization, was established in 2004 and is dedicated to environmental education. The Friends seeks to promote foster public awareness of the beauty and cultural history of the Willamette Valley. Throughout the year, the Straub Center offers a stream of programs for students and adults alike, all designed to heighten concern and respect for Oregon’s environment (http://www.fselc.org).

Our breathable Future- New educational PowerPoint on air pollution

Oregon PSR will debut a new educational presentation, “A Breathable Future: Health Effects of Air Pollution in the Portland Area” on Wednesday, January 28th, from 6 – 8 pm, at the University of Oregon White Stag Building, 70 NW Couch St., Portland. The event is free of charge, and the public is enthusiastically invited to attend.

In addition to the PSR presentation, the Northwest District Association will host an expert panel to discuss air pollution problems in their neighborhood, and current and model policy initiatives to address these problems. The panel consists of Environmental Health and Safety Professor Tony Uliano, PSU and Bob Amundson, a plant physiologist, NW resident and co-founder of Oregon Toxics Alliance.

The event will give Portlanders the information they need to make informed decisions in sometimes puzzling circumstances. For instance, it’s a fine summer morning and the day of your child’s big soccer tournament. You turn on the news and find out that the Air Quality Index shows it is “unhealthy for sensitive populations.” Is your child safe? Should you keep her at home? Should you call the coach to warn the team? Should Grandma go out to watch? As a parent, a Portland resident, a patient or a health care professional, “A Breathable Future” will provide the information you need to make decisions like this. There are also plenty of resources to take home or look up online afterward.
