The Oregon Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility is pleased to co-sponsor and announce the second of three forums in the series "Dealing with Waste in a Sustainable Community... waste reduction, waste management, growth and sustainable solutions" being held at Willamette University in Salem.

The second forum will be held on February 26, 2009, and will feature presentations by Dr. Paul Connett, internationally renowned expert on the benefits of waste minimization and dangers of waste incineration, and Jeffrey Hahn, Environmental Director of the Convanta Energy Corporation (operator of the Marion County incinerator in Brooks), as well as ample opportunities for audience questions and comments. Oregon PSR strongly endorses Dr. Connett's advocacy of waste minimization and opposition to incineration.

Oregon PSR maintains that extensive, well-documented reasons and options exist for Marion County and other communities to conserve their resources, minimize their municipal and medical wastes, avoid or phase out incineration, and reduce and minimize landfills. By embracing such options Marion County and other communities will conserve resources, create jobs, reduce pollutants and global warming gases, reduce health impairment and health care costs, and reduce direct and indirect financial threats to citizens, businesses, governments, etc.

Additional information on the forums, directions to the forums, and Dr. Connett is available here.

Introductory and extended sets of articles and videos promoting waste minimization and opposing incineration compiled by Oregon PSR are available here.

Information on the 2007 statement endorsed by hundreds of national, state/regional, and local organizations, including Physicians for Social Responsibility and Oregon PSR opposing renewable energy credits, tax credits, subsidies and other incentives for incinerators burning municipal, medical and other wastes is available here.

Information on PSR's March, 1996 resolution on dioxin and medical waste incineration is available here.
