Dealing with Waste in a Sustainable Community

Announcing a three part community forum series for dealing with waste reduction, waste management, growth and sustainable solutions for Marion County. Open to all.

On Thursday, January 22nd, the following presenters will focus on waste reduction and recycling efforts.
Oregon Department of Environmental Quality Waste Reduction Strategies
Cathie Davidson, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. Recycling is up in Oregon, but so is waste generation. Consumers and businesses need to develop new strategies for waste reduction.
Recycling Efforts in Marion County
Alan Pennington, Waste Reduction Coordinator for Marion County Environmental Services. Marion County leads the state in percentage of recycled materials, but more can be done. Population growth is putting pressure on existing facilities.
Creating Jobs and Saving Resources through Recycling
John Matthews, Garten Services. Garten has been recognized as a leader in recycling since the recycling industry first began to move mainstream in the 1970s.

Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) supports the extensive, well-documented options that exist for communities to conserve their resources, minimize their municipal and medical wastes, avoid or phase out incineration, and reduce and minimize landfills. By embracing such options, communities will conserve resources, create jobs, reduce pollutants and global warming gases, reduce health impairment and health care costs, and reduce direct and indirect financial threats to citizens, businesses, governments, etc.
