In the early morning hours of May 3, Dr. Charles Grossman boarded a plane that took him about 2,900 miles away from his Portland home for a week.

The 94-year-old doctor’s goal was not a vacation, but to challenge President Obama by flying to Havana.

Significantly, they pledged their countries to “achieving a nuclear free world,” committing to negotiating a replacement agreement for the Strategic Arms Reductions Treaty (START). Doing so ensures verifiable reductions to both countries' nuclear stockpiles.

Bill Targets Chemicals in Child Products

Children are particularly vulnerable to all chemicals, especially those that impact development, said Susan Katz, an Oregon pediatrician and member of Physicians for Social Responsibility.

Their bodies can't process toxins as effectively as adults so they accumulate more, she said, their lungs take in more toxins per unit of body weight and their brains are more sensitive to toxins during periods of development.

The cafeteria switched to hormone-free dairy about three years ago, despite the challenge of finding a cooperative food distributor.

"It was very difficult finding hormone-free dairy at first," Ken Gummer said. "We teamed up with the group Physicians for Social Responsibility, and a person there actually found a supplier for us."
